I like that all revved up expression. :D This kind of made me reflect on my own life. I'm already 19 and I am just starting to have a life and feel alive. Since I was young, my attitudes and "training" sort of followed my dad's i.e. to only look straight and never bother to look at those around me. I mean, I've always been an achiever because I focus EVERYTHING in my life on being on the top. In short, I've always taken life seriously for 18 years. Most of the time I said no to fun things that young teenagers do, like sleepovers, hanging out with friends in the malls, etc.. and I lived in the future, not in the present. I give more importance to what's gonna happen next. So whenever my friends invited me to go to the mall on a weekend, I would most likely say no because I have this project or homeworks to do. That's the story of my life for 18 years. I had nothing all revved up about. It has always been I being on the top... and missing out on all the fun of teenage life. What changed my lifestyle? I watched the movie Yes Man by Jim Carrey. And now I have a life. I am happier, I feel less pressure, I don't take life seriously, and I have never felt this alive. And now I am all revved up about everything! :D

I totally agree (and I definitely thought the same thing about the being inside for work when it's raining thing...) with everything you said.

I moved to Japan in 2007 and when I came back home (to New York/NJ) to visit, the most noticeable difference was the attitude of the people around me. The rushing, the huffing and puffing over a five minute delay, the overreaction to and complaints about little things. Now that I've come back home for good, I don't notice it as much but I've definitely tried to keep positive and hope that it rubs off on the people that I see everyday. I think you mentioned this in your Julie/Julia post. It's worked a little bit so far- so I hope to keep it up!

Thanks for a great blog, by the way- I look forward to reading more entries!

Jen,

I so needed to hear this today, great insights and wonderful, honest, brilliant writing as always . This should be published in mags for teens and women, you should have column in Self or Marie Clair or maybe Seventeen.

Jen, great post! I read both books when they first came out and then I saw the movie. Julia Child's cookbook really is a story of perseverance! And in the book Julie/Julia there was more time spent on the blog and what that meant to Julie and getting outside of her existing life in the "cubicle." I especially like your insights re negative criticism....xo J
